The Easy Way: Use a Graphical Method

We recommend using Seagate’s free Drive Detect tool to check your hard drive’s serial number graphically. With this tool, you can quickly check the serial number for any number of hard drives attached to your PC.

Although the tool is made by Seagate, it works for non-Seagate drives, too.

To reveal your hard drive’s serial number with this method, first, open Seagate’s Software Downloads web page in a web browser on your PC.

On the web page, scroll down to the “Utilities and Plugins” section and click “Drive Detect.” This will download the Drive Detect tool to your PC.

Click "Drive Detect" on Seagate's website.

Once Drive Detect is downloaded, double-click it to open it. This is a portable tool, so you don’t have to install it to use it.

Launch Drive Detect on a PC.

In the Drive Detect window that opens, you’ll see all your hard drives listed. Next to each hard drive, you’ll see the drive’s serial number. This is the number that the manufacturer has assigned to the drive.

That’s a quick and easy way to read your hard drive’s serial number!

The Geeky Way: Use Command Prompt

If you don’t want to use a third-party app, or if you prefer command-line methods, you can use a command with Command Prompt to reveal your hard drive’s serial number.

This method shows the exact same serial number as the method above.

To start, open the “Start” menu, search for “Command Prompt,” and click it in the search results.

Select "Command Prompt" in the "Start" menu on Windows 10.

In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter. Feel free to copy the command from here and paste it into your Command Prompt window.

Run a command to find the hard drive serial number in Command Prompt.

After entering the command and pressing Enter, Command Prompt will display a list of all your installed hard drives. In the “SerialNumber” column next to your hard drive, you’ll find the drive’s serial number.

And that’s how you find your drive’s serial number without taking it out of your PC! Very handy!
